Of Nangur, Wealth and Philosophy - Another snippet from Kaliyan Olimalai!

The pasuram in reference is Periya Thirumozhi 3-8-7.

From மாமதியம் திளைக்கும் till பாவையர் மாறு describes the wealth of Nangur.

The bungalows are so high that the moon gets struck in the flags on top of the homes and cannot continue its movement :-).  In the town (மணிமாடக் கோயில்)  with such houses, குறத்திகள் go house by house to sell pearls in exchange for நெல்!! The subtle point being, no one goes to buy pearls or other gems  in Nangur as everyone has plenty of those!

So yes, Nangur has all the wealth in the world(s). So is that all Kaliyan is trying to convey here? After all, he has used half of the pasuram to convey this seemingly small fact. Vyakyanam goes further into this as follows:

A short story is used to illustrate this. A fisherman happens to get a rare gem when catching some fish. He does not understand the value of this and so goes to town and sells it for a low price to a trader (in gems). The trader realizes the rarity of the gem and so its true value. He directly goes to the king and sells it to him for a large sum that's suitable for its value. The King instead of selling it further decides to enjoy it himself.

Object - Rare gem
Value of the Gem/Actors - Low (Fisherman), right value (trader), Superior Value (King)

So depending upon the state of mind, the same object goes through different value streams. This analogy is used to explain nature of ப்ரபத்தி and அதிகாரி .

Like the fisherman, those who don't understand the exalted state of ப்ரபத்தி , use it to get ஐஸ்வர்ய கைவல்யாதிகள். The ones who understand  ப்ரபத்தி as மோக்ஷ சாதனம் use it to get மோக்ஷபலன். But உத்தம அதிகாரிகள் use it as ஸ்வயம் புருஶார்த்தம் and not actively ask for பலம்.

So Kaliyan uses this description  நாங்கூர்  மணிமாடக் கோயில் illustrate nature of அதிகாரி!!

PS: An interesting reference to highlight wealth of Nangur. செழு முத்து வெண்ணெற்கு என  - They are exchanging pearls for நெல் as mentioned before. But pearls are செழு (meaning exalted). They just want வெண் நெல் not செந்நெல் . So they are giving more value to get low value நெல் because gems are plenty and have low value in Nangur.
